In February 2004, Jim and Kathy McCrain began a five month oddessy in New Zealand. Kathy was transferred to Auckland for a temporary work assignment, and Jim followed her for moral support. (Isn't he just the greatest husband?)
What follows is Jim's account of this adventure.
Jungle Walking!
So
what happens when you go walking through a jungle without a map and
compass? Many people would get lost. I, on the other hand, use the opportunity
to test my navigational skills and explore new lands. Actually, I had
looked at a map before I set out, so I knew what the 
topography was
like. What I wasn't prepared for was finding black-sand dunes that drop
down into a lake! One side of these same dunes actually runs down into
a small clear-water stream. I have never encountered
anything of this sort in my life. Sand dunes 
are supposed to be near
the ocean or in a desert, NOT in the middle of a lush jungle! Still,
that's were I found them!
The jungle was so dense and wet that it took me six hours to make my way little more than six miles. Then it took me an hours drive back to Auckland just to dry off! It was a great day! The kind of day that makes me want to get out and do even more hiking and exploring!
